You can generally find Jay somewhere west of the Rocky Mountains. Look first in the high deserts. He is an aspiring fly fisherman, mountain bike rider, and house-builder. He’s an old rugby player, a retired Army officer, and a part-time attorney. He loves being outside, traveling to places he’s never been, and trying to write things people like to read.

Last day today of my second year helping the Defen

Last day today of my second year helping the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies with their month-long justice course. I start the month knowing it's going to meet my #2 filter - do things I think are going to make the world around me a better place - but I end the month realizing it also meets #1: do things with people I love and respect. What a great group of humans, and great representatives of their home countries and militaries. I know armed conflict around the world causes so much pain and strife, but know there are good people everywhere trying to do the right thing, the right way. (And thanks to @m4ttk3nt and @cornjag1 - we bring the best reps of our country too!)

Also, I am outrageously susceptible to poison ivy. Like sit on a rock wearing shorts and it seeps through two layers of cloth and puts a dinner plate size worth of blisters on my ass susceptible. I now hike to the river in bubble wrap.

Do I remember who I wanted to be? I do. Many things. Sometimes fanciful (the president), sometimes fleeting (a zoologist), but almost always "writer". I don't think I'm there yet and hope, in my ways, I never do. But this is as exciting to me as anything: an essay in print. I'm planning on landscaping as a 10-year project, but getting pretty damn close to at least keeping the dust down. Then I shall hunker down and turn this place into a monastery. The bugs of Three Saints Road! There are mesmerizing creatures in the high desert. I only kill the flies and the termites. And the wind scorpion, who I smashed in my sleep. Sorry fella. #threesaintsroad #rememberwhoyouwantedtobe

3. Dark rover ant (their wings fall off once they mate. Nature loves a metaphor).
4. Wolf spider (I think. This one is small. I had a wolf spider in my house in Charlottesville as big as a kitchen sponge. I know because it was on my kitchen sponge).
5. Agile ground mantis
6. Summer chafer (June bug! Yet here we are in August).
7. Gray silverfish
8. Yellow velvet ant
9. Vella fallax (ant lion, and good lord do I love this name. If it was my friend I would always use the first and last name. "Bill, meet Vella Fallax. Vella Fallax, Bill."
10. Western drywood termite (RIP).

Another enchanted state special: Ride your mountain bike to an alpine lake and fly fish. Not sure East Fork Trail to Lost Lake is the best mountain bike ride in New Mexico, but I bet it's close.

Pro tip: Though you can complete this ride in your flip-flops, it is not recommended. Also, my "you look as smart as a bag of hammers" face is the same as my "you look absolutely gassed" face.
